Sam Leske, co-founder of Milky-Way.Kiwi, is a former Air Force pilot and diplomat who commanded New Zealand operations in Timor Leste. Now a science communicator and dark sky advocate, he delivers stargazing experiences, education, and astrobiology outreach, linking New Zealand communities to the wonder and science of the cosmos.

Sam Leske is a former Royal New Zealand Air Force pilot and diplomat whose career has taken him from commanding New Zealand operations in Timor Leste to guiding communities under some of the darkest skies in the world. Over 24 years in the Air Force, Sam honed navigation, leadership, and operational planning skills, working across cultures and in challenging environments — experiences that now underpin his work in science communication and outreach.

After leaving the Air Force, Sam worked in biosecurity for the Ministry for Primary Industries, bringing his strategic thinking and risk assessment skills to protecting New Zealand’s borders. This blend of precision, leadership, and public service would later find new expression in the field of space education.

Alongside Hari Mogoșanu, Sam co-founded Milky-Way.Kiwi, a social enterprise dedicated to connecting people with the wonders of the Universe. Through immersive stargazing experiences, public talks, and educational initiatives, they inspire audiences to see the night sky as part of our shared human heritage.

Sam is also a passionate advocate for dark sky preservation. He has been instrumental in delivering the Dark Sky Business Capability Course in Wairarapa, equipping local businesses to benefit from the region’s International Dark Sky Reserve while protecting its natural night environment.

His interest in astrobiology reflects a lifelong fascination with exploration and the big questions: Where did we come from? Are we alone? As a supporter of the New Zealand Astrobiology Network, Sam contributes to events, outreach, and international collaborations that link Aotearoa with the global astrobiology community.
